🪙 1887 Great Britain 4 Shillings (Double Florin) – Arabic “1” in Date

Grade: NGC AU Details – Reverse Cleaned
Variety: Arabic “1” date (scarcer collectable variety)

A classic large Victorian silver issue from the Golden Jubilee year of Queen Victoria, this 1887 Double Florin is a standout piece for any UK type specialist. Struck in sterling silver (.925), the 4-shilling denomination was only issued for a few years and today has strong collector interest — especially in the Arabic “1” in date variety.

This example has been authenticated and graded by NGC, with a designation of:

AU Details – Reverse Cleaned

Meaning the coin has excellent detail and light wear consistent with About Uncirculated preservation, but the reverse has evidence of prior cleaning, which affects originality and collectable premium.

🔍 Condition & Eye Appeal

  • Attractive natural toning on obverse and fields

  • Sharp portrait and legend

  • Only light friction at high points

  • Reverse shows cleaning marks — graded as Details rather than a straight numeric grade

Despite the cleaning, this is still a very nice survivor for the series and presents well in the slab.
